9/1 - 9/2/22 Ohio to Cumberland River

Thurs, September 1 - Angelo Towhead to Paducah City Dock (47.1 miles).  Volition was the first to pull anchor from Angelo Towhead followed by Port-A-Gee then Journey.  We began our trip upstream on the Ohio river at MM 981.  One of the positives of the Mississippi was the little push we got from the current, we'll be giving it all back as we go against the grain until we get to the Cumberland.

Rhonda on Volition shared some pics she took while we were underway - Thanks Rhonda!!

At MM 964 we entered Olmstead Lock - this time we were going UP.  That was pretty much the most excitement we experienced on the water this day.  Aside from the current, there was little discernable differences between the MS and OH (at least from my perspective), still lots of barge traffic and riverbanks - but it's better than a day at the office!

The Paducah City dock was in our sites at MM933.  We had already reserved a spot for the night through Dockwa.  When we arrived, another Canadian Looper, Riverbend was there to catch our lines - as well as Journey and Navigator. There was not any representation from the city, not sure how to get fuel or a pump out - the phone number routed us through a tangle of phone tree.  Port-a-Gee and Journey had some trouble getting power, but eventually were able to get our AC going, thank GOD - it's been really hot.  The Crew of Jackalope (27' NorSea sailing vessel) arrived as we were preparing to walk into town for dinner.  They are close to finishing the Loop (in Pickwick), so we were all excited to hear about their trip.

We all walked the short distance to Paducah Beer Werks where we enjoyed live music, good beer, food, and fellowship.  L - R:  Jackalope, Volition, Journey, Port-A-Gee:

Upon our return to the dock, there were 5 young men "hanging around" on the dock.  The dock is located at the end of town, away from everything. We felt a little vulnerable, so I called the local PD and requested that they look in on us through the night.  They were happy to do so.

Fri, September 2 - Paducah City Dock to Green Turtle Bay, Grand Rivers, KY (38.6 NM).  First things first!  Our evening walk into town revealed 2 points of interest to me:  Farmer's Market and The Quilt Museum. Brian had interest in neither - LOL.  I promised him I would be back to the boat for a 11:00 a.m. departure, and off I went.

Well, it's still Friday, so no Farmer's Market!  No worries, I took the opportunity to walk around town.  There is a lovely mural wall along the river depicting the history of the town.  Next, I found Kirchoff's Bakery and was thrilled to get some fresh bread and Cowboy Cookies!

(I neglected to get pics of the beautiful murals, but I got this plaque!  You're welcome!)

Leanne (Journey) agreed to meet me at the Quilt Museum for their 10:00 a.m. opening, where we gladly paid our $11/$12 (she got a Sr discount - ha ha) fee and were fascinated by the incredible works of art.  Now, I understand that Quilt Museum may not sound very enticing, but we thoroughly enjoyed our 1-hour tour.

Outside the museum is the wonderful sculpture, On the Trail of Discovery, by George Lundeen, representing the indigenous people that helped Lewis and Clark

As promised, I was back at the boat by 11:00 a.m. so we said our good-byes to Journey and Volition and pointed the bow towards the Cumberland River, 14 miles upstream of the Ohio.  After another 25 miles, we entered the Barkley Lock for a ride up 57 feet. along with Riverbend.

Our final destination, Green Turtle Bay was 1 more mile, and we were glad to be back in a familiar place.  We've spent a lot of time in this area the past couple of years.  Green Turtle Bay offers many great amenities and is a very Looper Friendly.  We were very grateful of the great shower rooms - where I let the water run as long as I wanted!

Sat, September 3 - I went for a run to Grand Rivers, wow, it was hopping!  Big Arts and Crafts Show +  Patti's Settlement + Labor Day = A LOT OF PEOPLE!  It's a great town, I'm glad it's a destination for folks.

When I returned, I helped Brian scrub any remnants of the Mississippi from Port-A-Gee.  Our dear friends, Marty & Brenda (former proprietors of Light House Landing), were gracious enough to pick us up and take us back to their lovely home for a dinner.

We're going to hang out in Kentucky & Barkley Lakes for the next couple of weeks.  We need to go home for a family event on the 15th.  When we return, we'll begin our next leg, Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway to Mobile Bay.

One Chartbook done, bring on the next!  Whooo Hooo!!!
