September 22-27/2018 - Logistics for Tennessee River Side Trip


Our second segment of the Loop is actually the entire 650 miles of the Tennessee River - Knoxville, TN to Grand Rivers, KY.

Being semi-retired, segment-loopers there are many logistics involved in our journey.

Sat., Sept 22 - Trailered Port-A-Gee from Racine, WI to our home in Lemont, IL to stock with provisions and prepare her for our trip down the TN.

 Mon, Sept 24, Cap. Brian left before dawn to challenge the driving rain and steep terrain while trailering Port-A-Gee to Fox Road Marina, Knoxville, TN.

He arrived in the pouring rain, and the dockhands could not have been nicer, helping him launch Port-A-Gee and get her secured in the slip.

Tues, Sept 25, In the morning, Brian drove the truck and trailer back to our (eventual) final destination - Lighthouse Landing in Grand Rivers, KY.

Enterprise in Paducah, KY came and picked him up to do paperwork on a one-way car rental back to Fox Road, Marina. - PHEW!!!

After all the hard work, Brian finally got to enjoy the company of Ron and Libby Johnson, and several Loopers (that were resting up after the arduous Mississippi/Ohio run) at Green Turtle Bay. It was here that he spent some time aboard, Louise and Lenny Anderson's Ranger Tug 31, Then Again.

Now back to logistics - Leave GTB and head to Nashville airport to pick up Loral, who likes to show up after all the work is done!

Wed/Thurs, September 26/27, 2018 - The rain just won't let up. It was literally raining cats and dogs! We enjoyed the hospitality of Fox Road Marina for a few more days.

8/25/23 - 9/10/23 - Detour Village, MI to Racine, WI (Lake Michigan) PORT-A-GEE IS GOLD!!!

Fri - Sat 8/25-26/23 - Detour Village, MI to Mackinaw City, MI (Mackinaw Municipal Marina) (39.7NM) Our buddy boats agreed on an 8:00 a.m. departure. We enjoyed a gorgeous day on Lake Huron via St. Mary's River.  Calm seas and sunny skies!! It was very exciting to see the Mighty Mac Bridge and lighthouses coming into view.   Mackinac Suspension Bridge As we got closer, we were thrashed around by the huge wakes left by the speeding Island Ferries. Port-A-Gee secured a slip in the Municipal Marina while our buddy boats stayed at the adjacent Strait's State Harbor. The Municipal Marina is the aforementioned ferry boats' port, so we were alerted to all departures with the blast of their horn. We walked around town.  It was pretty touristy, and kind of tacky, with LOTS of tee-shirt, ice cream & fudge shops.  It was kind of hard to find a good place to dine.  Mackinaw City has really benefitted from being the source of transport to Mackinac Island. 6/24 - 7/19/24 - Great Lakes - 2024 (Racine, WI to North Channel, Ontario, CA)

Port-A-Gee enjoyed a well-deserved winter's nap, and her crew crew spent the winter in Fort Myers.  Cap decided to go legit and completed a Captain's Licensing course.  He is now a US Coast Guard-certified Captain!  Congrats - but he was MY Captain all along. June 1, 2024  - Cap spent countless hours sprucing up Port-A-Gee, after our 14-month cruise, and she was ready to get back on the water.  It rained ALL DAY - we had to dig deep into our storage lockers to arouse our 7-year-old, never used raingear!  We made it through the 3 Illinois Locks (Dresden Island, Brandon Road, Lockport) without incident.  11 hours in the rain, and we finally arrived at Chicago Harbor's O'Brien lock for our measly 2-foot ascent to Lake Michigan.
